Hélène Grimaud presents the second part of a special two-part recital from the Polling Monastery library, set in the beautiful natural surroundings of south west Bavaria, a place which the pianist sees as one of her spiritual homes. Here she performs just one work: Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana. Composed in 1838, it is one of the key piano works of the Romantic era, in which Schumann sought to capture the different sides of his own character as well as the essence of his future wife, Clara Wieck. Kreisleriana has fascinated and occupied the French pianist throughout her career and she brings that experience – as well as her own innate sense of poetry and passion – to this performance.

Album review: The Arts Fuse

Grimaud, a pianist whose grasp of the Romantic sensibility (especially the willingness to risk and commit all in pursuit of an artistic goal) is total, has a field day with it here. From the downbeat of the stormy, rhythmically a-blur “Äusserst bewegt,” this is a Kreisleriana that holds nothing back.
