Hélène Grimaud and Sol Gabetta mark their debut recording together with a captivating recital of works for piano and cello by Schumann, Debussy, Brahms and Shostakovich to be released this October on Deutsche Grammophon.
It is rare that a music collaboration between two internationally renowned soloists feels so natural and inevitable. But when Hélène Grimaud and Sol Gabetta first played together last summer at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, they did not question the musical spark between them, they only knew they wanted to continue making music together. So they reunited this Spring to record the same programme for this new release and will tour together in December visiting Regensburg, Lyon, Berlin, Duisburg, Hamburg, Bremen, and in their adapted home country Switzerland, in Bern.
Grimaud is known for her thematic album releases. Her 2010 release, Resonances, was a musical journey through the Austro-Hungarian empire tracing the echoes, pre-echoes, and historical links between Mozart, Berg, Liszt, and Bartok. Her 2006 Reflection explored the close personal and musical relationship between Robert Schumann, his wife Clara, and their friend Johannes Brahms. Duo stands out here, as Grimaud notes, “The program is just a beautiful program. Sometimes there is no need for anymore justification than this.”
