Concert review: Bachtrack
This way in case of Brahms
The “sarcastic and scintillant” Philip Hale, music critic for three Boston dailies over the course of a 44-year career from 1890 until his death in 1934, did not like Brahms. As Symphony Hall was about to open in October of 1900, he waspishly suggested that one of the more prominent exit signs carry an addendum, “Exit- In Case of Brahms”.
