On August 8, Hélène Grimaud’s international tour with the Australian Youth Orchestra and conductor Manfred Honeck wrapped with a performance at Sydney Opera House. The works of Ravel and Brahms were enjoyed by sold out halls from Germany, The Netherlands, and China, all the way down under in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.

Mit dabei war die französische Pianistin Hélène Grimaud, die im Kurhaus einmal mehr beglaubigte, warum Maurice Ravels Konzert für Klavier und Orchester G-Dur einer der von ihr besonders gern gewählten Repertoireschwerpunkte ist. Die absolute Klarheit, Reinheit, aber auch der Schliff und Drive ihres Spiels in den Rahmensätzen kamen der idealen Interpretation des Werks ziemlich nahe, dessen Finalsatz sie gemeinsam mit dem Orchester als Zugabe wiederholte.

The French pianist Hélène Grimaud was with them, proving once more in the Kurhaus, why Maurice Ravel’s Concerto for piano and orchestra in G major is one of the works from her repertoire that she is so willing to play.  Utmost clarity, purity, but also the polish and energy of her playing in the outside movements were very close to the ideal interpretation of the piece (….)

On July 23, circumstance conspired against the Australian Youth Orchestra. Storms in the Frankfurt area led to widespread flight cancellations which, combined with the start of the summer holidays in Germany, have made it impossible for the Orchestra to reach their next destination in time for the concert. With the shortest of notice, Hélène Grimaud, indomitable and determined, nonetheless performed a beautiful duo recital programme with cellist Jan Vogler, with works by Schumann, Brahms and Shostakovich.

Das Publikum ist hingerissen von dem Notkonzert, von diesem weltrekordverdächtigen Kammermusikauftritt vor 3000 Menschen in der Reithalle – obwohl einige enttäuscht waren, auf Dvoráks 9. Sinfonie verzichten zu müssen. (….) Ein gewagter Auftritt dieses Duo Recital spontan? „Nun, gewagt ja, aber kein Risiko“, sagt Hélène Grimaud. Jedes Konzert könne schief gehen. „So was kann man wirklich nur mit Jan Vogler machen, weil er einfach cool und sensibel ist.“

The audience was overwhelmed by this concert, born out of necessity, by that world-record breaking chamber music performance in front of an audience of 3000 people in the Reithalle (…)
Was it daring to give this duo recital so spontaneously?  „Well, yes daring, but no risk“ says Hélène Grimaud. (…) „Something like that can only be done with Jan Vogler, because he is simply cool and sensitive.“

Ein fulminantes Duett. Der Glanz eines Zufalls. Jubel in der Halle, zwei Künstler im legeren Habit, die sichtlich froh sind, und als Souvenir aus „Fronkraisch“ noch ein Sonatensatz von Debussy. Glückliches Ende eines ungewissen Tages.

Between tenderness and wild abandon, reflection and attack, both artists performed a brilliant duel in sound with a committed, thoughtful and thrilling tone (…) A stunning duo. The happy chance of coincidence brought together two artists in relaxed dress, clearly delighted with the cheers in the hall.  (…) A happy end to a day full of uncertainty.
